Meaning:
The amount of 50,000. usually refers to money. (one of the denominations of Indonesian paper currency, the Rupiah, is 50,000 - hence the use of nickname "goban" as an alternative to the proper Indonesian word of "Lima puluh ribu".

Origin:
From Chinese mandarin, "wu wan" (indonesian transliteration = "u wan"). In Hokkien / Teowchew Chinese dialect that is commonly used in Indonesian-chinese communities, the equivalent of the mandarin word "wu wan" is "goh ban". It is modified in spelling into simply "goban" by Indonesians nowadays.

Basically, wu/goh means "five"
and "wan/ban means "ten thousand"
in the Chinese language, the counting system differs to the Indonesian / English counting system. in Indonesian, 50,000 would be expressed as "Lima puluh ribu" in which "lima puluh" means fifty, and "ribu" means (one) thousand. Much similar to the way the English counts.
However, The Chinese do not use the same number grouping when dealing with amount exceeding 9,999. i.e the chinese word for 10,000 is not "ten + thousand", but "one + ten thousand"

1 = "yi" (one)
2 = "er" (two)
3 = "san" (three)
4 = "shi" (four)
5 = "wu" (five)

10 = "shi" (ten)

1,000 = "yi qian" (one + thousand)
2,000 = "liang qian" (two + thousand) - "liang" is used instead of "er" in this case.
5,000 = "wu qian" (five + thousand)

9,000 = "jiu qian" (nine + thousand)
10,000 = "yi wan" (one + ten thousand - "wan" means ten thousand). in this case, notice that it is not "shi qian" (ten + thousand), but "yi wan" (one + ten thousand).

Therefore, 50,000 is pronunced "wu wan" / "goh ban" (five + ten thousand), not "wu shi qian" / "goh cap cheng" (fifty + thousand).
