Meaning:
The amount of 500. usually refers to money. (one of the denominations of Indonesian coin currency, the Rupiah, is 500 - hence the use of nickname "gopek" as an alternative to the proper Indonesian word of "Lima ratus".

Origin:
From Chinese mandarin, "wu bai" (indonesian transliteration = "u pai"). In Hokkien / Teowchew Chinese dialect that is commonly used in Indonesian-chinese communities, the equivalent of the mandarin word "wu bai" is "goh pek". It is modified in spelling into simply "gopek" by Indonesians nowadays.

Basically, wu/goh means "five"
and "bai/pek means "one hundred"
